CT-Detected Growth of Coronary Artery Calcification in Asymptomatic Middle-Aged Subjects and Association With 15 Biomarkers

Abstract: In this prospective study, a large part of participants had incident CAC or progression of prevalent CAC at 5 years of follow-up. Low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol were associated with CAC incidence and phosphate with CAC progression, whereas 12 other biomarkers had little value.

“…Similar results have been reported by other studies. 21 , 22 Further analysis of the CS based on gender showed that the three subjects who had a CS >400 were males ( Table 2 ), buttressing the fact that coronary artery calcification is more prevalent in men compared to women. 16 , 17 , 19 However, the P -value observed for the distribution as shown in Table 2 indicates that there is not enough evidence to determine the effect of gender on the distribution of CAC.…”

“… 9 Dyslipidemia was defined as low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (men ≤1.036 mmol/L, women ≤1.295 mmol/L), high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (≥3.0 mmo/L) and/or hypertriglyceridemia ≥1.695 mmol/L. 10 , 22 Obesity/overweight was determined using the body mass index (BMI). The BMI was calculated as the weight of patients in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters.…”

“…In the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study, CAC inevitably progressed with limited influence of CV risk factors [ 19 ]. Diederichsen et al [ 20 ] recently evaluated the predictive value of 15 biomarkers for CAC incidence and progression in asymptomatic middle-aged subjects at 5 years follow-up. This prospective study identified the association between total and LDL cholesterol and CAC incidence, and between phosphate and CAC progression; however, 12 other biomarkers did not significantly correlate with CAC.…”

“…This rate of progression of CAC was modest compared with other studies of the progression of CAC on CCTA. 13,21,22,[26][27][28] In the Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study (HNRS), subjects 45-50 years of age had a mean Δ CAC progression of 38 Agatston units over a 5-year period. 21 In HNRS, authors reported that once the CAC process had begun, the progression of CAC followed an exponential trajectory.…”
