CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): Technique, Indications and Performance

Abstract: Worldwide, colorectal cancer is the third most frequent cancer occurring in both sexes. Screening programs for early detection enable detection of tumors at an earlier stage and have been shown to reduce death rate. Currently, colonoscopy is the investigation of choice for colorectal cancer screening and for investigation of patients with suspected colorectal cancer. However, colonoscopy remains an invasive technique requiring anesthesia, with a risk of perforation and bleeding. In addition, even experienced c… Show more

“…Computed tomography colonography (CTC) or virtual colonoscopy has gained wide acceptance and is now considered as an excellent alternative in case of incomplete or contraindicated conventional optical colonoscopy (OC) [1]. However, suboptimal patient preparation or suboptimal colon distension may reduce the diagnostic accuracy of CTC.…”

“…CTC has fewer complications than colonoscopy, including reduced perforation rates [11] and can be better tolerated [12], whilst providing comparable rates of polyp detection [13]. However, most of the available data on the accuracy of CTC are in the setting of an asymptomatic screening population [14,15] rather than an older group with symptomatic colorectal cancer.…”
