PurposeThis study bibliometrically describes and depicts the intellectual structure and knowledge progress of CSR studies in the banking industry.Design/methodology/approachBibliometric analysis is used to quantitatively examine the bibliographic data that gathered from Scopus database. The evaluative and relational techniques are employed to produce the findings and mappings for research themes, impact and directions, as well as collaboration trends. A topical classification is also included to review the results of different types of analysis.FindingsThis study discusses how the CSR literature in the banking industry has evolved between 2009 and 2019. The publications increase significantly from 2015 to 2019 and the top journals, authors, affiliations and countries are identified. Stakeholder, disclosure, financial performance, Islamic banks, corporate governance and international banks are among the popular research and collaboration trends found in the extant literature. Reflecting on the arguments in the previous literature, several key research gaps and further suggestions are acknowledged for future studies.Research limitations/implicationsThe bibliographic data used in this study bounds to Scopus database and the methodology itself suffers a few limitations, which integration of other methodologies will be worthwhile to unearth the field beyond the current discovery.Practical implicationsThis study is beneficial to potential researchers, scientific journal editors, and bankers to understand the current research progression and evolution within CSR field in the banking sector.Originality/valueCompared to the existing bibliometric literature, this study is among the pioneer wide-ranging bibliometrics study covering co-word, citation, bibliographic coupling, co-authorship and co-citation for CSR research in the banking sector.

Este artículo presenta un análisis bibliométrico de 994 documento publicados durante el período comprendido entre los años 1973 y 2018. El objetivo fue identificar autores, temáticas y clasificar en clústeres las publicaciones que relacionan los desempeños social y financiero de las empresas. Para ello se hizo una revisión sistemática cuantitativa de la información recuperada de Google Scholar, Dimensions, Scopus y Web of Science utilizando los softwares Publish or Perish y VOSviewer. Como resultado se obtuvieron siete clústeres: responsabilidad sociale implicaciones; responsabilidad ambiental; comunicación y reportes sociales y ambientales; responsabilidad social empresarial y rendimiento financiero; comunicación con el consumidor; ética, contabilidad y herramientas administrativas; sostenibilidad. Además, se encontró que el tema ha generado más artículos pero que estos son cada vez menos citados; que predomina la teoría de los stakeholders como eje principal de la relación entre Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE) y desempeño financiero; y que los documentos provienen principalmente de países angloparlantes que al mismo tiempo son los que más conexiones generan entre sí en las citaciones.

(English) This thesis provides empirical evidence, with an unprecedented sample size, that sustainability news moves the stock market, particularly positive news related to fossil fuels. The findings confirm that there is a business case for greenwashing. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is a bibliometric study and an economic impact analysis of the literature, which helped define the hypotheses of the thesis. The second and third chapters analyze the impact of sustainability news on the stock market of major European and American energy companies between 2017 and 2019, respectively. The fourth chapter compares the market reactions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first chapter presents a state-of-the-art study on the economic impact of corporate sustainability. The bibliometric analysis of the 200 most cited peer-reviewed articles on "Corporate Sustainability Performance" shows that 70% of companies that implement sustainability measures have a positive economic impact on their operating or financial results. The second chapter investigates how shareholders of major European energy companies value sustainability narratives. Using the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT) news, the chapter analyzes the cumulative average abnormal returns (CAAR) and abnormal volatility (AV) through the event study methodology. The extensive data analysis and segmentation of news by tone, type of energy generation, and environmental consequences help understand the investment decisions of shareholders. The chapter finds that sustainability narratives significantly impact shareholder value, although there is no consensus on their interpretation. The third chapter investigates how shareholders of major US energy companies value sustainability narratives. The analysis of news from the GDELT database shows a clear negative bias in sustainability news, impacting the market negatively. Positive news about fossil fuels has a much more significant impact on the market. These findings suggest that regulators should establish a common narrative for shareholders and discourage investments in highly polluting activities. The fourth chapter compares Europe vs US before and during COVID-19 and showed notable differences on the markets' reactions to sustainability news, with the US market being more optimistic, particularly during the pandemic. However, both markets agree that nuclear energy remains on investors' agendas and that fossil fuels are less penalized by negative or neutral news and more rewarded by positive news, suggesting that they are more tolerated than other energy sources in the energy market before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the thesis shows that sustainability news affects the stock market, confirming the business case for greenwashing. The findings suggest that companies should adopt sustainable practices not only for ethical reasons but also for financial benefits. Policymakers should encourage companies to disclose accurate sustainability information and establish regulations that promote environmentally sustainable practices. (Español) Esta tesis aporta evidencia empírica, con un tamaño muestral sin precedentes, de que las noticias de sostenibilidad mueven el mercado de valores, en especial las noticias positivas relacionadas con los combustibles fósiles. Los hallazgos confirman que existe un caso comercial para el lavado verde. La tesis se divide en cuatro capítulos. El primer capítulo es un estudio bibliométrico y un análisis de impacto económico de la sostenibilidad encontrado por la literatura previa, que ayudó a definir las hipótesis de la tesis. El segundo y tercer capítulo analizan el impacto de las noticias de sostenibilidad en el mercado de valores de las principales compañías energéticas europeas y americanas entre 2017 y 2019, respectivamente. El cuarto capítulo compara las reacciones del mercado antes y durante la pandemia de COVID-19. El primer capítulo presenta un estudio de estado del arte sobre el impacto económico de la sostenibilidad empresarial. El análisis bibliométrico de los 200 artículos revisados por pares más citados sobre "Desempeño de sostenibilidad corporativa" muestra que el 70% de las empresas que implementan medidas de sostenibilidad tienen un impacto económico positivo en sus resultados operativos o financieros. El segundo capítulo investiga cómo los accionistas de las principales empresas energéticas europeas valoran las narrativas de sostenibilidad. Usando las noticias de la base de datos global de eventos, idioma y tono (GDELT), el capítulo analiza los rendimientos anormales promedio acumulados (CAAR) y la volatilidad anormal (AV) a través de la metodología de estudio de eventos. El extenso análisis de datos y la segmentación de noticias por tono, tipo de generación de energía y consecuencias ambientales ayudan a comprender las decisiones de inversión de los accionistas. El capítulo encuentra que las narrativas de sostenibilidad impactan significativamente el valor para los accionistas, aunque no hay consenso sobre su interpretación. El tercer capítulo investiga cómo los accionistas de las principales empresas energéticas de EE. UU. valoran las narrativas de sostenibilidad. El análisis de las noticias de la base de datos GDELT muestra un claro sesgo negativo en las noticias de sostenibilidad, impactando negativamente al mercado. Las noticias positivas sobre los combustibles fósiles tienen un impacto mucho más significativo en el mercado. Estos hallazgos sugieren que los reguladores deberían establecer una narrativa común para los accionistas y desalentar las inversiones en actividades altamente contaminantes. El cuarto capítulo compara Europa vs EE. UU. antes y durante el COVID-19 y mostró diferencias notables en las reacciones de los mercados a las noticias de sostenibilidad, siendo el mercado estadounidense más optimista, particularmente durante la pandemia. Sin embargo, ambos mercados coinciden en que la energía nuclear sigue estando en la agenda de los inversores y que los combustibles fósiles son menos penalizados por noticias negativas o neutrales y más recompensados por noticias positivas, lo que sugiere que son más tolerados que otras fuentes de energía en el mercado energético antes y durante el Pandemia de COVID-19. En general, la tesis muestra que las noticias de sustentabilidad afectan el mercado de valores, lo que confirma el caso comercial para el lavado verde. Los hallazgos sugieren que las empresas deben adoptar prácticas sostenibles no solo por razones éticas sino también por beneficios financieros. Los formuladores de políticas deben alentar a las empresas a divulgar información precisa sobre sostenibilidad y establecer regulaciones que promuevan prácticas ambientalmente sostenibles.
