Presently, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is considered as the most prominent technologies employed in commercial as well as in industrial sector. The WSN comprises of battery-operated nodes that are used to monitor the surroundings in order to keep record of the physical phenomenon like temperature, pressure, position, vibration, humidity, sound etc. These nodes can be utilized in several real-time application domains to perform different tasks like target tracking, home surveillance, pollution monitoring, structural monitoring etc. Depending on the type of nodes deployment and the application areas, WSNs can be exploited underground, underwater, terrestrial, wearable or environment embedded. Firstly, this paper categorizes research dimensions in wireless sensor networks primary and secondary research domains and the research contributions in those fields. Secondly, it discusses different soft computing-based clustering schemes from past two decades to deal with energy conservation issue in sensor networks. This paper provides a clear insight to the beginners of this field by covering literature review from 2008 to 2020.

The existing privacy-preserving aggregation query processing methods in sensor networks rely on pre-established network topology and require all nodes in the network to participate in query processing. Maintaining the topology results in a large amount of energy overhead, and in many cases, the user is interested only in the aggregated query results of some areas in the network, and thus, the participation of the entire network node is not necessary. Aiming to solve this problem, this article proposes a spatial range aggregation query algorithm for a dynamic sensor network with privacy protection (energy-efficient privacy-preserving data aggregation). The algorithm does not rely on the pre-established topology but considers only the query area that the user is interested in, abandoning all nodes to participate in distributing the query messages while gathering the sensory data in the query range. To protect node data privacy, Shamir’s secret sharing technology is used to prevent internal attackers from stealing the sensitive data of the surrounding nodes. The analysis and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of energy and privacy protection.

Efficient aggregation technique for data privacy in wireless sensor networks

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the existing cluster-based private data aggregation techniques are energyintensive due to high message transmission complexity. Reliable data transmissions are also vital for resource constraint WSNs. To address these issues, the authors propose a reliability enabled private data aggregation technique that has message transmission complexity of O(N). Every node in the cluster cleaves its data into n integrants using simple modular arithmetic with suitable prime moduli and transmits to the cluster heads (CHs) for intermediate aggregation. The CHs, in turn, forward the partial aggregate data to the base station where the final aggregate is recovered using an elegant Chinese remainder theorem. The authors use data privacy, communication overhead, and reliability metrics to gauge the performance of the proposed work. Numerical and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution outperforms the existing schemes having O(N 2) communication complexity.
