Crystallographic Study in the Nd2CuO4-Sr2CuO3 System

Abstract: A crystallographic study was done in the Nd2CuO4-Sr2CuO3 system. Five phases were found in this system; A: Nd2CuO4, B: Nd2SrCu2O6, C: (Nd0.45Sr0.55)3Cu2O6-y , D: (Nd1-x Sr x )2CuO4-y , and E: Sr2CuO3. Phases B and C possess Sr3Ti2O7-type structures, and phase D has the same structure as La2CuO4. No superconductivity was observed in any of the above-mentioned phases down to 4.2 K.

“…Doping these parent compounds with strontium or cerium respectively introduces holes or electrons in the CuO 2 sheets to make them superconducting. The solid solutions (La~_xSrx)2CuO4.y have been prepared over a wide composition range (0 < x < 0.67)(4) while (Ndl.xSrx)2CuO4_y only exists over a rather more limited composition range (0.55 < x<0.75) (8); however both are isostructural with K2NiF 4.…”

“…Naturally, Sr 2 CuO 3 , as a typical representative of one-dimensional Mott insulator of cuprates, have been widely investigated for its active role in the preparation of superconductors and unusual nonlinear response 48 . In more general terms, the structure of Sr 2 CuO 3 is similar to that of the two-dimensional compound La 2 CuO 4 , which only lacks oxygen atoms in Cu-O chains between the Cu ions in the c-axis direction, therefore, Sr 2 CuO 3 is a favorable precursor for the synthesis of Cu-O composites 912 . Previous studies focus much on searching for the analogs of Sr 2 CuO 3 or introducing other metallic elements to enhance the superconductivity of the final product.…”

“…The shortened c axis is associated with oxygen loss from the Cu-02 plane, as in [38], the structure transforms from S to T/0 to T' with decreasing x. For our La2CuOx system, the phase transformation is from S to T' and then to T; the reason for the different transition order in the two systems is not clear, although in our case the excess oxygens in the T' phase appar ently stabilize this structure.…”

“…The structure of FBagCïigOy [37] contains both CU-O2 plane and Cu-0 chain elements. Nonsuperconducting [38] Sr2GuO'^ [39] (S-phase) has isolated Cu-O-^ chains running along the a axis of the orthorhombic structure. The T/0, T', and S structures are shown in Figure 2 [4].…”
