Crystallization of benzimidazole by solution growth method and its characterization

Abstract: The potential organic NLO crystal of benzimidazole (BMZ) has been successfully grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature. The crystalline perfection has been verified by High resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) analysis. The very low angle boundary obtained for this solutiongrown specimen may be attributed to the segregation of solvent molecules (methanol), which were entrapped within the crystal during growth. The laser damage threshold has been measured by using high intensity … Show more

“…The single shot (1 pulse) laser damage threshold values were determined as 1.32 GW/cm 2 for (−1 0 1), 0.94 GW/cm 2 for (1 −1 1) and 0.79 GW/cm 2 for (0 1 1) planes, respectively. They were found to be higher than that of the standard nonlinear optical KDP (0.2 GW/cm 2 ) crystals [16]. The variations in the LDT values on different planes may be attributed to the anisotropic nature of the material in question.…”

“…These kinds of structural defects are probably due to the layered structure of the present crystal. Even in soft organic crystals such as benzimidazole, such boundaries were found (Vijayan et al, 2006). In our later investigations, such defects were found to be controlled by using a double-walled VBT ampoule to minimize the thermal fluctuations (Riscob et al, 2013).…”

“…Although the growth aspects of BMZ crystals have been studied earlier [1][2][3], there is no report on the nucleation kinetics of BMZ crystals. Growth of large size crystals from solution requires the knowledge about the nucleation parameters.…”
