A new series of metal-substituted ϵ-iron oxides, ϵ-Ru Fe O (x=0 (1), 0.005 (2), and 0.014 (3)) nanoparticles (average size=20 nm) is synthesized by sintering iron oxide hydroxide with ruthenium hydroxide in a silica matrix. The samples are characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) of transmission electron microscope. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that ϵ-Ru Fe O has an orthorhombic crystal structure with a space group of Pna2 and the Rietveld analyses show that Ru is doped selectively at the regular octahedral C site among the four non-equivalent Fe sites (A, B, C, and D site). Magnetization vs. temperature plots show that the Curie temperature (T ) depends on x, and T =498 K for 1, 497 K for 2, and 496 K for 3. Magnetization vs. external magnetic field plots indicate that the coercive field (H ) increases from 17.7 kOe (1) to 20.3 kOe (3). This increment of 15 % on H is attributed to the single ion anisotropy of the magnetic spin on Ru (4d , S=1/2).

Wide Color Variation in SiNO Thin Films Dispersed with Precipitated TiN Nano Particles

Amorphous thin films of Ti1−ySiy(N,O) with y ≥ 0.38 were prepared by reactive sputter deposition in a nitrogen atmosphere. Thermal annealing of the films in an ammonia flow above 800°C yielded Si(N,O) amorphous thin films dispersed with precipitated TiN nanosized particles. The film color changed with Si content y and the annealing conditions, from carrot orange to cream yellow in the as‐deposited films due to their oxynitride nature, and from dark green to canary yellow and from iron blue to horizon blue at respective annealing temperatures of 800°C and 900°C due to metallic nature of the TiN nanosized particles precipitated in the annealing.

The sol‐gel method is a very flexible route for producing sieving matrix such as SiO2 with pore radii in nanoscale region to embed oxide particles like Fe2O3. In this work, iron oxide nanoparticles embedded in a SiO2 glassy matrix prepared by the sol‐gel method have been investigated as a function of Fe/Si ratio. Different composition of dried gels with 1, 2, 10 and 20 mol% of Fe2O3 in the SiO2 matrix were heat‐treated (HT) in air, at temperatures from 400 ºC up to 1400 °C. The structure and morphology of the obtained glasses and glass‐ceramics were studied by X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Impedance spectroscopy measurements and magnetic characterization were performed as function of temperature and the results are related with the microstructure. The X‐ray diffraction patterns showed that increasing the amount of Fe2O3 oxide promotes the formation of crystalline phases, in particular silicate phases. The increase of the heat‐treatment temperature has a similar behavior. The electrical and dielectric properties were related with these structural modifications and with the sample morphology.
