Crystalline phosphorus fibers: controllable synthesis and visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity

Abstract: An efficient method is developed for the synthesis of single crystalline fibrous phosphorus submicron materials. Via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique, fibrous phosphorus fibers with diameters from ∼150 nm to 2 μm were prepared directly from amorphous red phosphorus. The as-prepared fibrous phosphorus exhibited interesting photocatalytic properties.

“…In Figure D, the cross‐sectional view of Ti‐RP/ZnO by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) exhibits an average thickness of ≈1.55 µm. As shown in Figure E,E1, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images of the RP film display the morphology of the nanosheet, clearly showing parallel lattice fringes of (001) facets with a d‐spacing of 5.81 Å, which is consistent with typical fibrous P . Furthermore, the Raman spectra (Figure S3, Supporting Information) between 300 and 500 cm −1 of amorphous RP and Ti‐RP further confirm the successful growth of RP on Ti, as Ti‐RP exhibits the peaks of fibrous RP .…”

“…First‐principles density functional theory revealed that the effective masses of both electrons and holes in single‐layered Hittorf's phosphorus (HP) had a strong anisotropy along x and y directions . It was also experimentally demonstrated that single‐crystalline fibrous phosphorus grown along the long axis of fibers via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) exhibited higher photocatalytic degradation activity than amorphous RP nanoparticles . However, to date, there are rare experimental results about the effect of crystallographic orientation on the phosphorus‐based photocatalysts for water splitting, with the mechanisms of performance improvement remaining unclear.…”

“…Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) was supplied by Tianjin Fengchuan Chemical Co., Ltd. Commercial RP and cadmium perchlorate hexahydrate [Cd(ClO 4 ) 2 ⋅ 6 H 2 O] were acquired from Energy Chemical. Prior to use, commercial red phosphorus was first pretreated by a hydrothermal method at 200 °C for 12 h to remove oxides and impurities from its surface according to the reported method …”
