Crystal structure, spectroscopic measurement, optical properties, thermal studies and biological activities of a new hybrid material containing iodide anions of bismuth(iii)

Abstract: A novel halogenobismuthate(iii) organic–inorganic hybrid material named bis(4,4′-diammoniumdiphenylsulfone) hexadecaiodotetrabismuthate(iii) tetrahydrate, (C12H14N2O2S)2[Bi4I16]·4H2O, has been prepared by slow evaporation at room temperature.

“…This gives rise to bond angle variance values of 37.65 and 18.34 deg 2 for [Bi(2)I 6 ] 3– and [Bi(1)I 6 ] 3– octahedra. Interestingly, the corresponding tetramer is the same as in the case of (C 12 H 14 N 2 O 2 S) 2 [Bi 4 I 16 ]·4H 2 O compound . Notably, Bi–I bond lengths and I–Bi–I angles match closely among the two materials.…”

“…52,53 Notably, bismuth metal halides have emerged recently as promising antibacterial candidates. 55 Aygun et al synthesized a series of bismuth(III) halides with benzaldehyde-N 1 -alkyl-thiosemicarbazone that were found to be most active against E. coli. 56 Ozturk et al demonstrated that bismuth(III) thiosemicarbazone complexes, such as BiCl 3 (η 1 -S-Hacptsc) 3 (Hacptsc = acetophenone thiosemicarbazone), exhibited toxicity against MCF-7 and MRC-5 cells, and antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa.…”

“…[ 43 ] Meanwhile, Raman spectroscopy was also used to characterize the ISPE (Figure S7, Supporting Information). The vibrational stretching I 3 − mode at 112 cm −1 , and the peaks at 56 and 132 cm −1 corresponded to Bi–I–PEO complexes, [ 44‐47 ] which represents the interaction between K 4 BiI 7 and the PEO substrate. In addition, the inductively coupled plasma data of ISPE revealed the presence of Bi 3+ in the modified PEO (Figure S8, Supporting Information), confirming the complexation of the K 4 BiI 7 filler with the PEO substrate.…”

“…Furthermore, the presence of chlorine in the structure boosts its ability to inhibit the multiplication of E. coli and Staph, so it can be considered like a bacteriostatic substance. This antibacterial property makes T3 more attractive compared to similar hybrid materials that showed a low reaction against these bacteria such as (C 12 H 14 N 2 O 2 S) 2 [Bi 4 I 16 ]⋅4H 2 O and (C 10 H 28 N 4 )[CoCl 4 ] 2 [94,95].…”
