Crystal structure, characterization and magnetic properties of a 1D copper(II) polymer incorporating a Schiff base with carboxylate side arm

Abstract: A new 1D polymeric copper(II) complex [{Cu(L)(CF 3 COO)} 2 ] n has been synthesized using a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL, ((E)-2-((pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)-5-chlorobenzoic acid) and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. Single crystal X-ray structural characterization reveals that the side arm carboxylate group of the coordinated Schiff base exhibits a μ 1,3 -bridging mode and connects the neighbouring copper(II) ions leading to a zigzag 1D chain structure where the copper(II… Show more

“…The intermolecular coupling is antiferromagnetic and comparable with the intramolecular one giving rise to the Weiss theta being small and negative. Among the previous studies, there are reports of both the weakly ferromagnetic [86][87][88][89] and weakly antiferromagnetic [29,31,36,39,90] couplings through the syn-anti carboxylate bridges.…”

“…The absence of half-field signal implies that a magnetic exchange interaction between Cu II ions is not taking place. 24 That is, each carboxylate group is linked to only one Cu II center and there are no two Cu II bound to the same ICNBA ligand. This latter evidence also indicates that Cu II is not found coordinated to isocyanide groups.…”
