A continuously operated helically coiled flow tube (HCT) crystallizer is investigated for crystal growth. Inline video-imaging is used for crystal shape analysis and residence time estimation of potash alum. The main finding is that there is a size-dependent particle residence time. Large particles move faster through the HCT than small particles. Consequently, small crystals have more time to grow in the HCT. Physical reasons for this behavior are proposed, for example small-scale flow characteristics. In a direct numerical simulation of the instationary Navier-Stokes equations, velocity fluctuations and a secondary flow are identified. The presented flow field may have a different impact on the particles and cause the size-dependent particle residence time. A particle size dependent residence time may potentially narrow the crystal size and shape distribution in such a process, frequently a desired feature in solids' production.

Continuous crystallization has gained interest in the pharmaceutical sector as part of the drive toward the transition from exclusive batch manufacturing to integrated continuous manufacturing in this industry. As a result, the design and operation of continuous crystallization processes for the preparation of pharmaceutical materials has been featured strongly in recent scientific literature. This review is an effort to gather together all of the published understanding on continuous crystallization with a pharmaceutical focus and to benchmark progress to date in realizing the potential benefits of transitioning this stalwart pharmaceutical unit operation from batch to continuous configurations.

In the pursuit of materials with structure-related function, directing the assembly of materials is paramount. The resultant structure can be controlled by ordering of reactants, spatial confinement and control over the reaction/crystallisation times and stoichiometries. These conditions can be administered through the use of flow technologies as evidenced by the growing widespread application of microfluidics for the production of nanomaterials; the function of which is often dictated or circumscribed by size. In this review a range of flow technologies is explored for use in the control of self-assembled systems: including techniques for reagent ordering, mixing control and high-throughput optimisation. The examples given encompass organic, inorganic and biological systems and focus on control of shape, function, composition and size.Graphical abstract.
