The fluidity of coal ash slag at high temperatures is an important factor that determines its applicability and operating conditions in entrained flow gasification. In this study, six synthetic slags with different CaO/MgO rations were prepared to study their effect on slag fluidity. The results showed that the flow temperature of slags decreased first and then increased with the decrease of CaO/MgO ratio. When the slag had a high or low CaO/MgO ratio, or when the contents of CaO and MgO in the slag were similar, the homogeneous slag showed a lower viscosity. The crystallization tendency of Ca was stronger than that of Mg. During cooling, slags with high or low CaO/MgO ratio showed obvious crystallization tendency, and formation of crystals would lead to a sharp increase in slag viscosity, so that the temperature of critical viscosity of slags decreased first and then increased with the decrease of CaO/MgO ratio.

“…The fluidity demonstrated by liquid ash slag when coal ash is melted at different temperatures is referred to as the viscosity–temperature characteristics of ash slag. To guarantee the smooth discharge of slag from the gasifier, it is necessary for the slag viscosity to be between 2 and 25 Pa s at the operating temperature of the entrained-flow gasifier. − If the slag viscosity falls below 2 Pa s, the liquid slag with strong fluidity will accelerate the wear of refractory bricks or water-cooled walls in the gasifier and reduce its service life. On the other hand, if the slag viscosity exceeds 25 Pa s, the slag fluidity will be poor and the slag layer will continue to accumulate and thicken, resulting in blockage of the slag outlet.…”

The stable fluidity of slag at a high temperature is crucial for the long-period operation of an entrained-flow gasifier. The diversity and difference of coal ash make it difficult to meet the requirements for stable slagging in a gasifier. Consequently, coal blending or adding flux has been employed in the industry to improve the fluidity of coal ash slag. As a carbon-containing matrix, industrial solid waste is a kind of energy substance. Utilizing existing industrial gasifiers to blend combustion of industrial solid waste can not only transform industrial solid waste into fuel but also improve the entrained-flow gasifier slagging performance using the unique ash chemical composition of industrial solid waste. Therefore, sorting out the effect of industrial solid waste on coal ash slag fluidity can not only clarify the regulating mechanism of coal ash slagging but also provide some theoretical support for the large-scale consumption of industrial solid waste. In this review, the effects of acid-and alkali-rich industrial solid wastes and coal co-gasification on coal ash slag fluidity were reviewed from the perspectives of ash melting characteristics and viscosity−temperature characteristics, and the effect mechanism of SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 / Al 2 O 3 (S/A), CaO, Fe 2 O 3 , and CaO−Fe 2 O 3 (Ca−Fe) compound fluxes on coal ash slag fluidity were elaborated from the viewpoint of mineral evolution and microstructure. Meanwhile, studies on the ash slag fluidity during the co-gasification of industrial solid waste and coal were prospected, which could afford theoretical guidance for the stable slagging of an entrained-flow gasifier and the resourceful treatment of industrial solid waste.
