Crystal Growth Velocity in As2Se3 Supercooled Liquid

Abstract: The crystal growth velocity of spherulitic As2Se3 in a supercooled melt of the same composition was studied by optical microscopy and thermoanalytical methods in isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The time dependence of crystal size is linear, which suggests the crystal growth is controlled by interface kinetics. Crystal growth velocity was determined as the slope of these linear dependences. The experimental results presented in this paper considerably extend the previously reported range of crystal gro… Show more

“…Reduced temperature ( T / T m ) dependent crystal growth rate for different materials. All the crystal growth rates of SiO 2 , Na 2 O·SiO 2 , Cu 50 Zr 50 , OTP, and GST, GeTe, AIST, as well as As 2 Se 3 , are obtained from the literature. The crystal growth rates of As 2 S 3 (black rhombuses) at standard atmospheric pressure (∼100 kPa) were estimated from the data measured at an ultrahigh pressure of 15 kbr …”

“…The exponential term in eq can be neglected for moderate entropy of melting (Δ S m / R = 2.47) and supercooling Δ T > 300 K. The decoupling parameter ξ then can be expressed as where E η is the activation energy of viscous flow, estimated as E η = 462 kJ/mol . The decoupling parameter calculated from eq is ξ = 0.92 for β-GeS 2 crystal growth in the bulk, ξ = 0.53 at the glassy surface, and ξ = 0.36 in the thin film.…”

“…A similar conclusion was drawn from calorimetric and microscopic crystal growth data in selenium 46 and As 2 Se 3 supercooled liquid. 58 On the other hand, the parameters M and N indicate a relatively fast increase in the initial crystallization rate that might be due to a secondary nucleation induced by crystal growth. 61,69 This, in combination with impingement of growing crystals, can be a plausible explanation why the standard JMA model cannot be used for the description of nonisothermal calorimetric data.…”

“…Significant crystallization studies were reported for phase change materials of chalcogenides 28,29 . Some authors also focused their attention on the combined study of the kinetics of crystal growth of chalcogenide glasses by microscopy and DSC 30–33 . The crystal growth rate in thin chalcogenide films was calculated using a correlation between DSC data (described by the JMAK model) and microscopy data 29,34,35 .…”
