Conical light scattering is uncovered in poly- and mono-domain, nominally pure and Eu-doped strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystals over a wide temperature regime. The appearance of two scattering cones, a scattering line and a corona is observed and can be explained comprehensively within the Ewald sphere concept. Photorefraction, scattering from domain boundaries or from growth striations can be excluded from explaining the origin of the scattering. It is shown that the temperature-persistent scattering process is related to a growth-induced seeding rod, i.e. a composition inhomogeneity primarily localized at the centre of the SBN sample. The rod is directed parallel to the c axis and yields a refractive-index inhomogeneity with spatial frequencies on the micro-scale.

The paper is concerned with the results of investigation of barium-strontium niobate chemical composition change, of the lattice parameter, microhardness of the crystal region. Analysis reveals the increase of the barium content up to 4% and the change of the crystal lattice parameter by 8, leading t o considerable tensions and crystal cracking. The etching of the slides perpendicular to the growth axis has been realized as well as the decoration of the fresh cleavages by anthraquinone vapours which indicate the electric inhomogeneity in the crystal volume.

The distributions of edge dislocations and residual mechanical stresses in Ba,Srl -zNb20, (BSN) crystals are investigated and the explanation of the nature of the "growth column" isproposed. The "growthco1umn"isa defect zone going throughallof the crystal and usually repeating in its cross-section the contour of the seed crystal. The "growth column" boundary is the closed contour with extremely high edge dislocation density. These dislocations are connected with thermal stresses due to seed-melt contact or abrupt crystal widening. Under proper crystal seeding and widening conditions one can obtain the BSN crystals with dislocation densities less than 10 cm-2 and without the "growth column".The method of chemico-mechanical polishing of BSN crystals not forming a defect layer on the surface of the crystals have been developed. The high temperature diffusion annealing is shown to eliminate the growth striae in BSN crystals.(6
