Crystal Growth and Structure of the Barium Chloride Nitrido­tantalate(V) Ba₃Cl₂TaN₃

Abstract

Transparent, light yellow single crystals of the barium chloride nitridotantalate(V) Ba 3 Cl 2 TaN 3 (hexagonal, P6 3 cm; a = 1507.39(8) pm, c = 632.98(3) pm, c/a = 0.420; Z = 6) are obtained by the reaction of the barium azide chloride Ba(N 3 )Cl or its ternary decomposition products with the container wall of arc-welded tantalum ampoules at 900°C after four days. Its crystal structure displays onedimensional chains 1 ϱ {[TaN 2/2 N 2/1 ] 4-} consisting of corner-sharing [TaN 4 ] 7tetrahedra (d(Ta-N) = 191-200 pm), which run along [001]

“…All nitridotantalates known so far either exhibit isolated [TaN 4 ] 7– anions as in, for example, Ba 9 N­[N 3 ]­[TaN 4 ] 2 , Li 3 Sr 2 [TaN 4 ], Li 7 [TaN 4 ], and Li 16 [TaN 4 ] 2 O, or infinite chains of corner-sharing [TaN 4 ] tetrahedra as in, for example, Sr 2 [TaN 3 ], Ba 2 [TaN 3 ], and Ba 2 Cl 2 [TaN 3 ] .
