Crystal growth and property characterization for PIN–PMN–PT ternary piezoelectric crystals

Abstract: Binary piezoelectric crystal Pb(Mg 1=3 Nb 2=3 ÞO 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT) has excellent dielectric and piezoelectric properties, which has led to the commercialization for medical ultrasound imaging. Recently, there is a growing demand for piezoelectric crystals with improved thermal and electrical properties. Ternary piezoelectric crystals Pb(In 1=2 Nb 1=2 ÞO 3 -Pb(Mg 1=3 Nb 2=3 ÞO 3 -PbTiO 3 (PIN-PMN-PT) have increased depoling temperature and coercive field than binary PMN-PT. To better understand the ternary cr… Show more

“…E C is relatively stable within a crystal boule for PIN-PMN-PT crystals of different PIN mol%. The moderately steady PIN content likely led to the stable coercivity for PIN-PMN-PT crystals [24]. In contrast, variations in PMN and PT contents had little effect on crystal E C .…”

“…The MnO content distribution in the single crystal boule obtained during this research differs completely from that obtained for a boule grown using the conventional Bridgman growth method which exhibits exponential increase along the growth direction. 29) These results indicate that the continuous feeding of Ceramics B with low MnO content (0.1 wt%) to the initial melt of Ceramics A with high MnO content (0.9 wt%) during crystal growth is effective in achieving the desired MnO content distribution along the growth direction. As expected, MgO content increases slightly from 1.17 to 1.26 wt% to compensate for the change in MnO content, however, the rate of increase is only 8% which is about one fifth that of the MnO content.…”

“…Large sized PMN-PT single crystals are grown mainly using the Bridgman technique [10][11][12]. Based on this technique, researchers have further managed to improve the di/piezoelectric properties of the PMN-PT system through some effective ways [13][14][15][16][17].…”
