Crystal Growth and Associated Properties of a Nonlinear Optical Crystal—Ba2Zn(BO3)2

Abstract: Crystals of Ba 2 Zn(BO 3 ) 2 were grown by the top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method. The optimum flux system for growing Ba 2 Zn(BO 3 ) 2 crystals was 2BaF 2 :2.5B 2 O 3 . The transmission spectra of a (100)-orientated crystal indicated an absorption edge of 230 nm. Powder second-harmonic generation measurement revealed that Ba 2 Zn(BO 3 ) 2 can achieve type-I phase matching behavior at the fundamental wavelengths of 1064 and 532 nm respectively. The second-harmonic generating efficiency is around 0.85 and… Show more

“…The crystallographic asymmetric unit contains three unique sodium atoms, one unique samarium atom, two unique boron atoms, and six unique oxygen atoms. Each B atom is coordinated by three oxygen atoms into nearly flat BO 3 tetrahedron geometry with three B-O bond lengths of 1.352(4)-1.399(4) Å and bond angles of 116.5(3)-123.2(3) • , which is the common value in borate compounds [17,18]. All BO 3 triangles are isolated in two types of linear array, whereas Na + and Sm 3+ atoms reside among the BO 3 groups and connect them through the columbic action of Na−O and Sm−O to form the structure of Na 3 Sm(BO 3 ) 2 , as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…On the application side, to propose the glasses for nonlinear device applications figure of merit is a distinct criterion and is given by 60 α λ = F n 2 2 2 (8) where F is the figure of merit, α 2 is the two-photon absorption coefficient, λ is the excitation wavelength, and n 2 is the nonlinear refractive index. When the condition F < 1 is satisfied, the glasses could be used for switching applications such as passive mode locking and optical Q-switching of lasers (to produce ultrashort pulses).…”

“…Due to the good monochromaticity, strong directivity, and high brightness, lasers have been used extensively in the fields of industry, communication, and information technology, through applications such as laser welding, laser etching, and free special optical. Benefiting from the frequency conversion by NLO crystals, a UV laser can be expediently and efficiently obtained [1][2][3][4]. Nowadays, some well-known borates, such as β-BaB 2 O 4 (β-BBO) [5], (LiB 3 O 5 ) (LBO) [6], CsLiB 6 O 10 (CLBO) [7] have been commercially applied.…”
