“…The best known example of a monodentate bpy ligand is found in the compound [MeHg(3,3'-Me 2 bpy)](NO 3 ) (Fig. 3a) [39] in which the Hg…N distance is 3.289 Å, the angle between the least squares planes of the pyridine rings is 74.27°, the N…N distance within the bpy is 3.042 Å and the ratio d 1 /d 2 is 1.56. These metrical parameters provide a good comparison for other monodentate bpy complexes.…”

“…Very often these effects are subtle and difficult to predict, as exemplified in the case of methylmercury(II) complexes which typically exhibit linear two-coordinate structures. The complex [MeHg(bpy)][NO 3 ] is three-coordinate with a bidentate bpy ligand[ 38 ], whereas in [MeHg(3,3'-Me 2 bpy)][NO 3 ] (3,3'-Me 2 bpy, 6) the interactions between the methylsubstituents destabilize the chelating mode and result in a complex in which the metal is linear two-coordinate with a monodentate 3,3'-Me 2 bpy ligand[39]. These examples also exemplify the difficulties of defining coordination number in complexes of this type.…”

“…1 (Prizant et al, 1979;Olivier & Beauchamp, 1980;Hubert & Beauchamp, 1980;Canty, Chaichit, Gatehouse & Marker, 1978;Wong, Carty & Chieh, 1977). Departure from linearity is significant for Hg (7) with a C(7)-Hg(7)-N(7) angle of 173 (1)% as a result of packing effects.…”

“…Crystallographic studies indicate that a phenyl ring in [PhCH2HgSCPh 3] (Bach, Weibel, Schmonsees & Glick, 1974) and [MeHgl~H2CH(CO~-)(p-OHPh)] , and the uncoordinated pyridyl ring in [MeHg(3,]NO 3 (Canty, Chaichit, Gatehouse & Marker, 1978) are in an orientation consistent with the presence of a weak rt interaction between Hg and a C--C bond of a phenyl ring or the C(2')=N(I') bond of the pyridyl ring. Thus, the three solid-state structures to date suggest that the observed upfield shift in IH NMR spectra of MeHg H complexes also results from a weak zt interaction in solution, and to further test this we have determined the structure of [MeHg(2-Bzlpy)]NO 3.…”
