Crystal and Electronic Structure of Y 5Al3C4. -A black metallic single crystal of the title compound is synthesized from the elements using lithium metal as a flux (Nb ampule, 1250 C, 72 h). The new compound is characterized by single crystal XRD and DFT electronic structure calculations. It crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/mbm with Z = 2. Aluminum contributes Al-C polar-covalent and Al-Al metallic bonds to the structure. The Al-Al bonds form a planar Al grid, which is connected by carbon atoms giving rise to Al-C-zigzag chains.
