Cryptococcus yokohamensis sp. nov., a basidiomycetous yeast isolated from trees and a Queensland koala kept in a Japanese zoological park

Abstract: Three strains were isolated from the nostrils of a koala and the surrounding environment in a Japanese zoological park. Sequence analysis of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the large subunit rDNA D1/D2 domains in addition to physiological and morphological studies indicated that the isolates represent a single novel species belonging to the basidiomycetous genus Cryptococcus (Tremellales, Tremellomycetes, Agaricomycotina). Phylogenetic analysis based on D1/D2 and ITS regions revea… Show more

“…2015 ) and consists of ten Tremella species previously included in the mesenterica and fuciformis groups as distinguished by Chen (1998) . Additionally, Cryptococcus yokohamensis is included in this family based on previous phylogenetic results by Alshahni et al. “…An anamorphic yeast species, Cryptococcus yokohamensis , was recently described and showed a close relationship to the Tremella species in the Tremella sensu stricto clade ( Alshahni et al. 2011 ).…”

“…Consequently, monitoring the mycobiota of these rare animals and their habitats, particularly Cryptococcus species and related basidiomycetous yeasts, is of considerable importance to both humans and animals. Indeed, during the 8 years up to and including 2012, over 500 fungal strains were detected in nasal swabs of Queensland koalas and their habitats in Japanese zoos [ 2 , 15 , 20 , 21 ]. Of the isolated basidiomycetous yeasts, C. neoformans was identified as the predominant species in nasal smears and Rhodotorula minuta was detected most frequently in the breeding environments [ 21 ].…”
