Cryotherapy versus electrocautery in the treatment of genital warts.

Abstract: SUMMARY Forty-two male patients with ano-genital warts were randomly allocated to a singleblind study of cryotherapy versus electrocautery. There was no significant difference in the success rates of these two forms of treatment in patients followed for three months. Cryotherapy was qualitatively much more acceptable to the patients than electrocautery. It seems particularly suited to patients with widely scattered warts who are unable to attend for regular treatment.

“…A randomized prospective study comparing surgical exci sion to podophyllin for first-episode perianal condyloma demonstrated success rates of 93 and 76%, respectively [12], Patients treated by surgical excision experienced sig nificantly fewer recurrences than those in the podophyllin treatment group: 29 compared to 65% at 12 months. When compared in the same study, electrodesiccation was more effective than cryotherapy at 3 months follow up (91 versus 62%) [13], On average, fewer treatments were required for clearance by electrodesiccation (1.4) than by cryotherapy (2.6).…”
