Cryosurgery in chronic rhinitis

Abstract: Cryotherapy, a tool of dermatologists for many years, has received increasing attention among otolaryngologists since being “reintroduced” as a surgical technique by Cooper in 1961.1 Miller2 and others have studied extensively its value in treatment of tumors of the head and neck. In non‐neoplastic diseases, freezing has been used by House3 and others for Ménière's syndrome, and by Hill4,5 for tonsils, nasal polyps, and for epistaxis. The response of tissues to freezing have been summarized by Hanckel.6

“…However recent scanning electron microscopy studies of nasal mucosa 6 weeks after submucosal diathermy (and cryosurgery) refute this by showing 'consid erable and widespread damage' of the mu cosa [9,11]. Cryosurgery of the inferior tur binates has been advocated in recent years [10,11,27] and one paper suggests that regeneration of healthy ciliated nasal epithe lium is a constant feature without evidence of scarring [10].…”

“…Dr. William cahn 5 defined cryosurgery as branch of therapeutics that relies for its value on local tissue changes reduced by rapidly achieved very low temperature. Ozenberg 6 reported good results employing Freon as an coolant in cryosurgery. Ligezinski et al 7 used cryosurgery and found it be more useful than other conventional methods in early stages.…”

“…Various methods of treatment are avoidance of precipitating factor, desensitization or hyposensitization, specific hypoventilation, antihistamines, corticosteroids, sodium cromoglycate, gamma globulin, thyroid hormone, injections of sphenopalatine ganglion with alcohol, zinc ionization, sub mucosal injections of corticosteroids, steroid aerosol, anti-leukotrienes, oral decongestant, intranasal decongestant, intranasal anticholinergics, immunotherapy and cauterization, submucosal diathermy and cryosurgery. [12][13][14][15][16] Various methods of treatment have been advocated, each with its own limitations and degree of success. Topical antihistamines, oral antihistamines are also recommended as first-line therapy in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.…”
