Two Series-Connected Hybrid (SCH) magnets are under development at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. The first SCH is for the Helmholtz Centre Berlin (HZB) in Germany. The HZB SCH will be a horizontal bore, 30 T magnet and will be used for neutron scattering experiments. The second SCH is for the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) in Tallahassee, FL. The NHMFL SCH will be a vertical bore, 36 T magnet. Both SCH Magnets combine a set of resistive Florida-Bitter coils with a superconducting outsert coil constructed of cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC). The two SCH magnets are designed for various operating scenarios including those with multiple ramp cycles at various rates. Both of the superconducting magnets are forced flow cooled with supercritical helium at 4.5 K. A standard refrigerator with a capacity of about 150-200 W at 4.5 K will be used to supply the cooling power and the forced mass flow rate. The cryogenic system of the SCH magnet consists of a helium refrigerator, a valve box with subcooler, a magnet cryostat and cryolines. In this paper, the design of the cryogenic system is described.

The High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Sciences is developing a 40 T hybrid magnet. The hybrid magnet cryostat consists of two separate but attached cryostats. The main function of the cryostats is to provide a thermal barrier between the ambient temperature experimental hall and the supercritical helium forced cooled superconducting magnet. It also provides feed-through penetrations for all the connecting elements inside and outside the cryostat. The Outsert Magnet Cryostat is a large vacuum vessel with cylindrical shell, standard elliptical top, and flat bottom. The structural analyses, including buckling, for the cryostat vessel have been carried out using finite element code. Stress analysis results show that the maximum Von Mises stress will be below the allowable value. In this paper, we focus on the structural analyses and design of the cryostat.

A new cryogenic system is under construction at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) for the cooling of the Series-Connected Hybrid (SCH) magnet as well as the existing 45 T hybrid system. The SCH is a vertical bore, 36 T magnet under development at the NHMFL and it will be installed at the NHMFL in 2013. The 45 T hybrid magnet system producing a 45 T steady field has been operating successfully as a user facility since 1999. The existing cryogenic system at the NHMFL has been in service since 1994 and it is used for supplying Liquid Helium (LHe) to the users and also cooling the 45 T hybrid magnet. The new system has a specified refrigeration capacity of 750 W at 4.5 K and will replace the current refrigerators after its construction due to the increasing maintenance in current refrigerators and the increasing LHe demand by the users at the NHMFL. The design of the new cryogenic system, consisting of a main refrigerator, a distribution system and a gas management and purification system, and its status are presented in this paper.
