Cryoablation Combined with Iodine-125 Implantation in the Treatment of Cardiac Metastasis from Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma: A Case Report

Abstract: Objectives: A 36-year-old Asian man was referred to our hospital with cardiac metastasis. He had a history of alveolar soft part sarcoma and initially underwent resection in 2005. Methods: After exposing the tumor by thoracotomy, cryoablation was performed under ultrasound guidance. This treatment was combined with iodine-125 seed implantation to treat the cardiac metastasis. Results: The patient had an uneventful recovery, and his cardiac function shows no obvious abnormalities. Imaging techniques suggest tha… Show more

“…The 125 I seed implantation method has received more and more attention in view of slight injury to normal tissues. This therapy was initially used for the treatment of prostate cancer and has also been investigated in the treatment of other solid tumors in recent decades [7][8][9][10]. There are studies documenting its efficacy in terms of local tumor control [25][26][27].…”

“…Recently, image-guided iodine-125 ( 125 I) seed brachytherapy has received more and more attention, several studies reporting that 125 I seed brachytherapy provided promising results for the local control of solid tumors such as head and neck cancers, prostatic malignancies, and many other malignant tumors [7][8][9][10][11]. In these studies, 125 I seed implantation was capable of delivering a sufficient dose of radiation to the tumor mass, causing less damage to adjacent normal tissues.…”

“…In this case, radioactive material is placed near tumors inside the patient, allowing higher, localized dose of radiation in less time, and reducing systemic exposure to ionizing radiation. Niu et al found that cryoablation combined with iodine-125 seed implantations could be a palliative treatment of cardiac metastasis from alveolar soft part sarcoma 99 . Results reported by the same group proved percutaneous combination treatment of iodine-125 and cryoablation may have a useful role in the management of stage IV pancreatic cancer less than 6 cm in diameter when surgery and chemotherapy are not options 100 , 101 .…”

“…In the last several years, iodine-125 (125I) seed brachytherapy has gained popularity in the treatment of several cancers after showing that this treatment was associated with encouraging local control of solid tumors, such as head and neck cancers and prostate cancer [68][69][70][71]. The therapeutic effect of this treatment is achieved via the introduction of iodine-125 radioactive seeds to the tumorous liver tissue, leading to complete destruction.…”
