Crushing method selection for non-centrifugal sugar production by FAHP–ELECTRE I

Abstract: The non-centrifugal sugar (NCS) industry is one of the oldest small-scale cottage industry in India, whose technological features are not changed for several decades due to which the production and consumption of NCS has reduced significantly. One way to attend this problem is to select the best and sustainable methods among the existing technologies at various stages in the production process. In the production of NCS, juice extraction is the primary and essential process. The present work gives an insight to… Show more

“…Furthermore, as demonstrated in the literature (Sravya, Srinivas, Sunkara & Reddy, 2020;Beeram, Morapakala, Deshmukh, & Sunkara, 2020;Srinivas, Sravya, & Raj, 2020) as well as in the later sections of this paper, these sustainability criteria themselves are functions of several subcriteria, which suggests that arriving at a sustainable process requires simultaneous optimization of all these criteria. Such kinds of problems are best solved by multicriteria evaluation (MCE) techniques.…”

“…Initially, to identify the appropriate evaluation criteria that govern the above-mentioned four elements of sustainability, questionnaires have been prepared based on the literature sources (Farahbod, 2020;Moldavska & Welo, 2017;Srinivas et al, 2020). The information for the questionnaires has been obtained from the field studies conducted at various prominent NCS cottage industries located in the southern part of India.…”

“…The processing of NCS is a continuous process of heat and mass transfer involving clarification, boiling and concentration of sugarcane juice [2]. A traditional NCS production unit typically consists of a sugarcane juice crusher, an underground furnace fitted with single or multi-pan systems, where the water is evaporated to concentrate the juice to produce NCS [3] [4]. In India, a large portion of the NCS is manufactured in small-scale cottage level industry [5].…”
