PURPOSEThe aim of this study was to define a color space of non-vital teeth and to compare it with the color space of matched vital teeth, recorded in the same patients.MATERIALS AND METHODSIn a group of 218 patients, with the age range from 17 to 70, the middle third of the buccal surface of 359 devitalized teeth was measured using a clinical spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade Advance). Lightness (L*), chromatic parameters (a*, b*), chroma (C*), hue angle (h) and the closest Vita shade in Classical and 3D Master codifications were recorded. For each patient, the same data were recorded in a vital reference tooth. The measurements were performed by the same operator with the same spectrophotometer, using a standardized protocol for color evaluation.RESULTSThe color coordinates of non-vital teeth varied as follows: lightness L*: 52.83–92.93, C*: 8.23–58.90, h: 51.20–101.53, a*: −2.53–24.80, b*: 8.10–53.43. For the reference vital teeth, the ranges of color parameters were: L*: 60.90–97.16, C*: 8.43–39.23, h: 75.30–101.13, a*: −2.36–9.60, b*: 8.36–39.23. The color differences between vital and non-vital teeth depended on tooth group, but not on patient age.CONCLUSIONNon-vital teeth had a wider color space than vital ones. Non-vital teeth were darker (decreased lightness), more saturated (increased chroma), and with an increased range of the hue interval. An increased tendency towards positive values on the a* and b* axes suggested redder and yellower non-vital teeth compared to vital ones.

Introduction:Among the various causes of tooth discoloration after root canal treatment, percolation of sealer remnants into the dentinal tubules of the pulp chamber is the most common cause.Objectives:The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of dentin bonding agent (DBA) in preventing coronal discoloration caused by four different root canal sealers- MTA Fillapex, Sealapex, Zical and Z. O. B seal at different time intervals by measuring chromatic alterations using digital images analysis method.Methodology:Ninety mandibular premolars were collected and sectioned at 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction. Standard access cavity preparations of dimensions (depth-3 mm, width-0.8 mm, and length-3 mm) were prepared with a No. 245 bur through the cervical access. Following the standard irrigation protocol, specimens were then randomly divided into nine groups (four groups without DBA [1–4] +4 groups with DBA [5–8] +1 negative control [9]). In Groups 1–4, four different root canal sealers (MTA Fillapex, Sealapex, Zical, and Z.O.B seal) were applied to the walls of the pulp chamber. For Groups 5–8, the samples were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and DBA application was done before the respective root canal sealer application. The cervical access in all specimens was sealed using glass ionomer cement. Digital photographs were taken under standard lighting and environmental conditions at different time intervals: preprocedural, postprocedural, and after 1, 2, 3, and 4 months. These images were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CS6 from which laboratory values and subsequently Delta E values were obtained.Results:Statistical analysis performed using repeated measures ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's tests show that the groups with DBA application had significantly lower mean Delta E values (P < 0.05) compared to the groups without DBA application.Conclusion:DBAs applied to the dentinal walls of the pulp chamber before obturation can effectively reduce the sealer-induced coronal discoloration.

The aim of this study is to measure color changes caused by two regenerative protocols over 3 months, and the effectiveness of internal bleaching. Twenty extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were used. The apex and canal were prepared to reproduce immature teeth. Teeth were divided: group 1: Triple‐antibiotic‐paste was applied for 3 weeks and then changed for blood until 3 months. Group 2: Blood was inoculated and sealed at cemento‐enamel junction level with Biodentine for 3 months. Both groups were subjected to three sessions of internal bleaching. Color assessments were taken at baseline and at 2 and 3 weeks, 2 and 3 months, and 1, 2, and 3 weeks from the beginning the bleaching phase. Statistical significance was considered at P = .05. Both techniques produce color changes above the acceptability limit at 2 weeks. Chromatic variation caused by Triple‐antibiotic‐paste was intense and progressive over time. Replacement of the Triple‐antibiotic‐paste with blood made the color change more intense and progressive, with significant statistical differences at 2 and 3 months (T4 > T3; P = .028). The internal bleaching technique was statistically more effective in the Triple‐antibiotic‐paste group at 1 week (P = .002). Both techniques cause unacceptable color changes, causing Triple‐antibiotic‐paste more staining than Biodentine. Two sessions of internal bleaching recovered clinically perceptible color in both regenerative endodontic procedures without returning the original color.
