Crowdsourcing Bentham: Beyond the Traditional Boundaries of Academic History

Abstract: The Bentham Papers Transcription Initiative 2 (Transcribe Bentham for short) is an award-winning crowdsourced manuscript transcription initiative which engages students, researchers, and the general public with the thought and life of the philosopher and reformer, Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), by making available digital images of his manuscripts for anyone, anywhere in the world, to transcribe. “…For example, CCL research revealed on multiple occasions that in addition to the fact that out of the whole population, only a small group of people participates in CS, only a tiny group of those participants do most of the work within the project (the 1% rule of the Internet culture 26 ). For example, in Transcribe Bentham, a modest group of 16 volunteers have completed most of the tasks (Causer & Terras, 2014). Similar dynamics were observed by most participants at the Citizen Cyberlab Summit.…”

The Transcription Center generates JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) files from text entered into a single data field.…”

“…However, traditional online crowdsourcing projects on manuscript transcription rely primarily on the individual efforts of volunteers rather than through collaborative approaches (Daniels, Holtze, Howard, & Kuehn, ). Prior work suggests that manuscript transcription is not an easy job and usually requires a lot of time, effort, and intellectual input from the public (Causer & Terras, ). Especially when the complexity of transcribing tasks is increasing, it is difficult to find sufficient and qualified volunteers to engage with the cultural heritage projects.…”
