Crowdsourcing-Assisted Radio Environment Database for V2V Communication

Abstract: In order to realize reliable Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems for autonomous driving, the recognition of radio propagation becomes an important technology. However, in the current wireless distributed network systems, it is difficult to accurately estimate the radio propagation characteristics because of the locality of the radio propagation caused by surrounding buildings and geographical features. In this paper, we propose a measurement-based radio environment database for improving the accurac… Show more

“…where P t is the transmitted power (dBm), K dB is the constant path-gain factor in dB units at a reference distance d 0 , α is the path-loss exponent, and d i is the distance between the vehicle location x i and the BS location. Note that, in this contribution, the small-scale fading effect is assumed to be averaged out by the receiver (see [31] for a discussion about this aspect). Hence, from now on, REM reconstruction or channel estimation in this paper will refer to the acquisition or estimation of the large-scale channel effects (only path-loss and shadowing values).…”

“…A radio map is defined as a map that visualizes the spatial distribution of the received signal power values. A crowdsourcingassisted radio map has been the focus of research attention in recent years [7]- [12]. Fig.…”

“…We propose to characterize interference at a given channel and location as a random variable, and REM to store proper interference distribution parameters. This solution allows for higher accuracy than typically used single-number interference characterization, e.g., by its mean power [27], [25], [26]. As the interference distribution at a given location will be estimated using a limited number of sensing reports, its accuracy can be insufficient.…”

“…• We propose to train Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) in order to model interference distribution in secondary spectrum channels. State-of-the-art Radio Environment Maps usually are designed so as they contain pairs of location-mean interference power [27], [25], [26]. This approach is sufficient while modeling interference from relatively stable sources, e.g., terrestrial television stations.…”
