Crowds, citizens, and science: a multi-dimensional framework and agenda for future research

Abstract: Research projects that actively involve 'crowds' or non-professional 'citizen scientists' are attracting growing attention. Such projects promise to increase scientific productivity while also connecting science with the general public. We make three contributions. First, we argue that the largely separate literatures on 'Crowd Science' and 'Citizen Science' investigate strongly overlapping sets of projects but take different disciplinary lenses. Closer integration can enrich research on Crowd and Citizen Scie… Show more

“…We do not discuss these tools further in the present study, which mainly focuses on social media analysis. 4 https://decidim4cs.ml/ When applying the proposed pipeline to the different analysis envisioned, some critical issues emerge. They come from the experience of projects such as Crowd4SDG 5 and E2mC [5]), as well as from the literature (see Section II):…”

“…In the literature, social media is considered a form of crowdsourcing and not necessarily an activity of CS [3]. However, the effect of combining the two approaches in a multi-dimensional framework has been studied in different research communities [4]. Also, the combination of automatic analysis of images contained in posts and the collaboration of human-based computing has been discussed by several authors in the literature [5]- [7].…”

“…The CSPB implementation is based on the open-source crowdsourcing framework PyBossa and its code is publicly available under the 'CitizenScienceCenter' organization on GitHub. PyBossa 15 is an ongoing open-source development project. It is an extremely flexible and versatile technology used for the development of platforms and for data collection within collaborative environments, analysis and data enrichment.…”

“…Crowdsourcing (or crowd science) and Citizen Science are often studied in separate research communities. The potential of combining their approaches in a multi-dimensional framework was discussed in [15]. Within Crowd4SDG, the potential of social media was discussed in [36], considering lessons learned from case studies for SDG monitoring, to provide key statistics and discuss also the role of local indicators.…”

“…Citizen science bridges the gap between research, science, and surrounding community by involving the public in studies and experiments [3]. One citizen science perspective is to increase knowledge production, while another perspective considers both scientific and non-scientifc goals, such as citizen empowerment, education, awareness, and advocacy [4,5]. Scientific literacy can be an outcome of both citizen science and science education, and entails understanding of science which is important for everyday challenges.…”
