Crowdcloud: a crowdsourced system for cloud infrastructure

Abstract: The widespread adoption of truly portable, smart devices and Do-It-Yourself computing platforms by the general public has enabled the rise of new network and system paradigms. This abundance of well-connected, well-equipped, affordable devices, when combined with crowdsourcing methods, enables the development of systems with the aid of the crowd. In this work, we introduce the paradigm of Crowdsourced Systems, systems whose constituent infrastructure, or a significant part of it, is pooled from the general pub… Show more

“…This takes the theoretical theme of how to create a participatory society a step further. In line with this approach, it has also been discussed that a community's potential needs and supports could be discovered by utilising simplified systems with assistive technologies to analyse big data that is then collected and archived in the community (Hosseini et al, 2019;Takemoto & Ota, 2017).…”

“…In the field of IoT, enabled by the widespread adoption of portable smart devices, there has been an increasing interest for crowdsourcing which has led in numerous applications in fields such as environmental monitoring or emergency management [29], [30], as well as recent international standard on the requirements and reference model of such systems [31]. Crowdsourced systems are defined as systems whose constituent infrastructure is pooled from the general public using crowdsourcing methodologies [8]. Based on the characteristics of a "wise" crowd defined by Surowiecki [32], we identified in previous work the functional requirements of a "canonical", i.e.…”

“…Based on the characteristics of a "wise" crowd defined by Surowiecki [32], we identified in previous work the functional requirements of a "canonical", i.e. application-agnostic, crowdsourced system, with regard to IoT [8]: 1) Diversity: A canonical crowdsourced system should allow the incorporation of diverse infrastructure into play, i.e. to be able to crowdsource heterogeneous devices.…”
