“…The venom components responsible for the hepatotoxicity are still undetermined, but they probably involve PLA 2 action on cell membrane lipids and mitochondrial respiration (38), as well as various cell types such as lymphocytes (41,42), macrophages (39,40,43,44), mast cells (45), and platelets (3,(46)(47)(48)(49). In support of Coagulation disturbances (19,20) leading to fibrin deposition and ischemia, mainly through the action of the thrombin-like enzyme (gyroxin) of this venom (8,9,19) could also contribute to the hepatic damage registered in the present study.…”

“…The addition of indomethacin to the lymphocyte culture abrogated the suppressive effect caused by crotapotin, thus implicating the participation of COX derivatives in this suppression. This hypothesis was corroborated by increased amounts of PGE 2 measured in the supernatant of lymphocytes and purified macrophages cultures [223]. Together, these data infer that crotapotin activates the innate immune response and the cytokines and eicosanoids produced by this activation may modify the subsequent adaptative immune reaction.…”

“…Crotapotin, seems to have anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities, as seen in the in vivo inhibition of carrageenin-induced rat paw oedema [222], as well as by means of suppressing lymphocyte transformation in vitro [223]. The addition of indomethacin to the lymphocyte culture abrogated the suppressive effect caused by crotapotin, thus implicating the participation of COX derivatives in this suppression.…”
