Cross-Validation of the MEDEAS Energy-Economy-Environment Model with the Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System (TIMES) and the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP)

Abstract: In the present study, we compare energy transition scenarios from a new set of integrated assessment models, the suite of MEDEAS models, based on a systems dynamic modeling approach, with scenarios from two already well know structurally and conceptually different integrated assessment models, the Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System (TIMES) and the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning system (LEAP). The investigation was carried out to cross-compare and benchmark the response of MEDEAS models with TIMES and LEAP … Show more

“…It is a scenario-focused energy system modeling software from the Stockholm Environment Institute [43]. LEAP, as an optimization framework, finds widespread application in diverse fields including integrated energy modeling, water resource management, emission estimation, and generation expansion planning [44][45][46][47][48]. LEAP employs the accounting method for energy-related activities simulation.…”

“…Lastly, the Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System (TIMES) model [41] is bottom-up, linear programming tool applied for long-term energy systems planning allowing to analyse effect of different scenarios. It optimises the whole energy system including supply and demand services by minimizing the total cost in the considered modelling period [42].…”

“…The TIMES model is used to identify a solution for energy supply with the least amount of total energy loss and energy production at the lowest cost [57]- [60], while having the ability to take into consideration the added value of the products from biorefineries. Henceforth, the modelling approach is selected for purpose of this study, and the model created is named as Forestry Bioresource Value Model (FBVM).…”
