Cross Talk from Pets to People: Translational Osteosarcoma Treatments

Abstract: Osteosarcoma is almost identical in companion animals and in people, so research in basic cancer biology and treatment is readily translational across the species. In this article the authors (one DVM and one MD) present examples of species "cross talk" based on their parallel careers in musculoskeletal oncology surgery. Dogs in particular provide a relevant osteosarcoma model that is 10 times more prevalent than the corresponding human condition and offers a unique opportunity to answer questions related to l… Show more

“…Similarities between human and canine OS are striking and include thè bimodal age distribution, the high incidence of morbidity and mortality, the site of the tumor, histologic features and the response to the various treatment modalities (Withrow and Wilkins, 2010;Rowell et al, 2011). The biggest difference is that OS is much more common in dogs than in people.…”

“…Further studies are needed to assess whether this is due to lack of H 4 R upregulation in these specific NI models or NI in general, or a failure of 1 to detect this because of relatively high non-specific binding. 5 ]-Octreotide was conjugated to the carboxylate groups of the PAMAM dendrimer (G3.5) [1]. 99m Tc labeling was carried out by a direct method.…”

“…The PIP ligand was synthesized with various substituents in order to fine tune the physical properties of the corresponding Re(I) and Tc(I) complexes. Methods The new PIP ligands were synthesized by reacting 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione, ammonium acetate, a diamine and glacial acetic acid in a one pot reaction at 125°C for 3 h. The Re(I) complexes were prepared in two steps starting from [Re(CO) 5 3 (PIP-R)(NMI)] in two steps. The quantitative formation of the final product was confirmed by HPLC and comparison to the corresponding Re(I) standards.…”
