Cross-talk between neurons and glia: highlights on soluble factors

Abstract: The development of the nervous system is guided by a balanced action between intrinsic factors represented by the genetic program and epigenetic factors characterized by cell-cell interactions which neural cells might perform throughout nervous system morphogenesis. Highly relevant among them are neuron-glia interactions. Several soluble factors secreted by either glial or neuronal cells have been implicated in the mutual influence these cells exert on each other. In this review, we will focus our attention on… Show more

“…In any case, cholesterol is probably not the sole glia-derived factor that influences synapse development. Astrocytes synthesize a variety of components [40][41][42] and future studies will show which of these affect synapse formation directly without acting on neuronal survival or growth.…”

“…Os resultados obtidos apontam para uma redução no processo proliferativo celular com visível redução na proliferação glial de culturas tratadas com extrato de carqueja. As interações neurônio/glia tem sido responsáveis por diversos processos ligados a construção da arquitetura neuronal (Gomes et al, 2001). …”

“…Processos como neurogenese (Lim & Alvarez, 1995), formação sináptica (Pfrieger & Barres, 1997), proliferação (Gomes et al, 2001) e diferenciação (Garcia-Abreu et al, 1995) estão diretamente ligados a formação e manutenção do sistema nervoso central in vitro e in vivo. Fatores solúveis secretados tanto por glias e neurônios como neurotransmissores (Pereira & Araújo, 2001), hormônios e fatores de crescimento tem sido implicados na formação arquitetônica do cérebro (Gomes et al, 2001).…”

“…Moreover, interactions between glia and neuron-glia cross talk cannot be inferred from histological information as they take place in the extracellular space without direct cell-to-cell connections [ 126 ]. Currently, the dynamics of the cellular networks [ 127 -129 ] are studied using in vitro approaches [ 130 ], which provide a good footing to understand disease-specifi c modulation of network dynamics in vivo [ 131 ].…”
