Switched capacitor multilevel inverter (SCMLI) with reduced components is attractive for higher number of voltage levels due to less implementation complexity and low cost. In this study, a new family of hybrid SCMLI for high frequency power distribution system is presented to eliminate the intermediate power conversion. Firstly, a five-level SCMLI employing a single voltage source is proposed, which is further extended to nine-level (9L) with its operation. Further extension/enhancement of the proposed 9L-SCMLI for generating a higher number of voltage levels with reduced number of components is achieved on the basis of structural modification. The mathematical analysis for determination of capacitance, power loss analysis and comparative analysis has been provided in detail. A comprehensive comparison with other similar topologies is also provided to highlight the merits of the proposed topology. Simulation and experimental results are discussed for various dynamic load conditions with different output frequencies to validate the suitability of the proposed SCMLI for various high-frequency AC applications, such as renewable energy systems, microgrids, electric vehicles and so on.

Summary This paper presents a new structure for a quasi‐resonant switched capacitor multilevel inverter. This structure offers multiple features of the conventional multilevel structures. Moreover, regarding the provided output voltage levels, the proposed structure exploits a new quasi‐resonant basic module which helps to diminish circuit cost and complexity using fewer power components. In the proposed structure, the balancing of capacitors voltages is achieved by series and parallel connection with the voltage source and without the need to employ a complicated control system. In order to obtain higher voltage levels at the inverter ac side, a developed H‐bridge is used in which the basic module is extended horizontally in separate cells on either side. Through a quasi‐resonant inductor deployment in the basic module, current spikes of capacitors are filtered which overwhelms decreasing of capacitor value and also lengthening the capacitor lifetime besides decreasing electromagnetic interference (EMI). Coupled with extensive simulation studies, experimental analyses are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed 17‐level inverter.

Conventional multilevel inverter topologies like neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitor (FC), and cascade H bridge (CHB) are employed in the industry but require a large number of switches and passive and active components for the generation of a higher number of voltage levels. Consequently, the cost and complexity of the inverter increases. In this work, the basic unit of a switched capacitor topology was generalized utilizing a cascaded H-bridge structure for realizing a switched-capacitor multilevel inverter (SCMLI). The proposed generalized MLI can generate a significant number of output voltage levels with a lower number of components. The operation of symmetric and asymmetric configurations was shown with 13 and 31 level output voltage generation, respectively. Self-capacitor voltage balancing and boosting capability are the key features of the proposed SCMLI structure. The nearest level control modulation scheme was employed for controlling and regulating the output voltage. Based on the longest discharging time, the optimum value of capacitance was also calculated. A generalized formula for the generation of higher voltage levels was also derived. The proposed model was simulated in the MATLAB®/Simulink 2016a environment. Simulation results were validated with the hardware implementation.
