“…The downward trend of the p, pn reactions with increasing energy contrasts with the upward trend for p, 2p reactions. As also shown, the free proton-proton cross section drops only from "'" 29 to "'" 23 mb across this energy range (presumably true also for the free neutron-neutron cross section), while the free proton-neutron cross section drops more rapidly, from "",71 mb to ""'32 mb (23,117) . If the mean free path for attenuation is inversely proportional to the appro priately averaged free-nucleon, free-nucleon cross sections, it does not seem to vary sufficiently between neutrons and protons to explain the marked difference between p, pn and p, 2p excitation functions.…”

“…In collisions between free nu cleons, the practical threshold for pion formation is about 350 MeV (23,117) : the fraction of collisions producing pions then rises rapidly and exceeds one half above about 1 GeV. We therefore expect that "clean knockout" p, pn reactions can include such processes as p, 2mr+, p, pmro, p, pn7r+7r-, etc., and that the "inelastic scattering" and "charge-exchange scattering" parts of the "ISE" and "CESE" mechanisms can include such reactions as p, n7r+ and p, P7r-, etc.…”

“…The present results would indicate the existence of some interaction out to distances of 2 F. This interaction is small compared to the "core" interaction, being only about 0.5 mb out of a total n-p cross section of some 40 mb. 7 However, because the charge-exchange process is insensitive to shadow scattering, which dominates direct elastic scattering at small angles, it would seem to provide a particularly sensitive probe for measuring a long weak tail in the nucleon-nucleon interaction.…”
