Cross-sectional study of serum reactivity to Anisakis simplex in healthy adults in Niterói, Brazil

Abstract: Although the incidence of anisakiasis is rising worldwide, its frequency is still unknown in Brazil. The aim of this study was to verify immunoreactivity to Anisakis simplex antigens in healthy adults and determine its possible relationship with frequency of fish consumption and allergy symptoms. A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out with 67 volunteers recruited from a military facility in Niterói, Brazil. The subjects completed a structured questionnaire and serum titers of specific anti-Anisaki… Show more

“…Specific anti-Ani s1 and Ani s7 IgE antibodies are detected in patients’ sera after adding diluted Anisakis antigens to ELISA plates, and then incubating with secondary antibodies coupled to an enzyme. After washing, so that excess of unbound antibodies can be removed, a substrate is added, and remaining enzymes elicit a chromogenic or fluorescent signal, which is proportional to the antibody-antigen complexes and can be measured as optical density (OD) [ 34 ].…”

“…In Brazil, this aspect has been little explored. A recent study among volunteers ( FIGUEIREDO JUNIOR et al . 2013 ) showed a link between the frequency of fish consumption and immunoreactivity to Anisakis simplex antigens in healthy adults, suggesting the previous immune sensitization without allergy symptoms.…”

“…The cutoff was calculated as threefold the average optical densities of 20 wells of the ELISA reaction described, by substituting PBS-T for human sera ( Figueiredo Junior et al, 2013 ).…”
