Cross-Reactive Influenza-Specific Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity in Intravenous Immunoglobulin as a Potential Therapeutic Against Emerging Influenza Viruses

Abstract: IVIG preparations contain broadly cross-reactive ADCC mediating antibodies. IVIG may provide at least some level of protection for individuals at high risk of severe influenza disease, especially during influenza pandemics prior to the development of effective vaccines.

“…There has been renewed interest in the nonneutralizing functions of Abs during clinically important human infections, such as those involving HIV (37-41), dengue (42), and influenza viruses (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30). In both animal models and mild-to-moderate human influenza infections, Fc-FcγR interactions aid in the clearance of influenza infection (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30).…”

“…In both animal models and mild-to-moderate human influenza infections, Fc-FcγR interactions aid in the clearance of influenza infection (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30). Herein, we performed the first comprehensive investigation to our knowledge of the Fc functional Ab response in serial samples across two cohorts of subjects hospitalized with severe H7N9 or seasonal influenza infections.…”
