Cross‐linked hydrogel and polyester resorbable ventilation tubes in a chinchilla model

Abstract: Resorbable polyester pressure equalization tubes demonstrate predictable resorption behavior and similar biocompatibility characteristics when compared with nonresorbable tubes. Silver modification may confer some stability to PLGA tubes. Hydrogel tubes have very short resorption times, tend to enlarge the myringotomy site, and show greater inflammatory changes.

“…The chemical composition of the PLGA-HA/Lex scaffolds has been proven to be nontoxic. Specifically, PLGA has been approved by the FDA, , and HA has been used in the preparation of biological scaffolds because of its ability to promote the regeneration of cells and tissues . Given that Lex is a commonly used antibiotic in clinical settings, its biocompatibility is reliable .…”

“…11,14 Poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) (PLGA), a polymer material approved by the FDA, 15 is commonly used because of its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. 16,17 However, conventional PLGA scaffolds lack antibacterial properties. Loading antibiotics can help address this issue; however, achieving controlled drug release remains challenging.…”

“…However, this extrusion is often unpredictable and premature or prolonged TM presence can lead to subsequent surgical procedures or severe long‐term complications, including hearing loss . Resorbable materials are a desirable alternative to eliminate extrusion‐related complications by resorbing and restoring TM tissue.…”
