Cross-Layer Handover Optimization Using Linear Regression Model

Abstract: With the fast proliferation of mobile Internet, the wireless community has been increasingly looking for a framework that can provide seamless mobility. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on movement prediction in mobile WiMAX environment. Prediction is achieved by linear regression model with keeping track of the signal strength of mobile users. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handove… Show more

“…Akyildiz and Wang [2] introduced a new model based on the stochastic behaviors of mobile users to predict their future locations. Choi et al [3] provided a cross-layer handover scheme based on a simple linear regression model to predict future signal level which reduces the total handover latency. Alaya-Feki et al [4] used a statistical analysis based on regression method allowing the amelioration of Radio Resources Management and they also propose amelioration in the handover procedure.…”

“…In this way the L3 handover process will be initiated ahead of the L2 handover and the handover latency will be greatly decreased [6] [7]. [8] [9]have made some research on the prediction method and its feasibility validation, so we utilize the related fuzzy theory to evaluate the proposed method, that is, indicators of L3 handover are triggered according to the relative movement tendency between the nodes. Detailed speaking, node measures the distance to the corresponding node periodically and computes the relative velocity δv after the distance is beyond the safe range.…”

“…Using this scheme, the message exchanging latency between the SS and the target BS is minimized. In [10], a linear regression model is adopted to reduce the handoff latency by letting the network layer handoff occur before the MAC layer handoff.…”
