Cross‐cultural validity of the Individualised Care Scale – a Rasch model analysis

Abstract: The Individualised Care Scale - Patient version can be used in cross-cultural studies for the measurement of patients' perceptions of individualised care. Information obtained with the use of the Individualised Care Scale in clinical nursing practice is important, and valid measures are needed in evaluating patients' assessment of individualised care, one indicator of care quality.

“…The Individualised Care scale is a two‐part instrument (ICS‐A and B, Suhonen, Leino‐Kilpi, & Välimäki, ; Suhonen, Berg et al., ; Suhonen et al., ), originally developed in Finland, which measures patients' perceptions of the support of individuality (ICS‐A) and perceived individuality in the care received (ICS‐B). Both parts include three subconcepts: the clinical situation (seven items), the personal life situation (four items) and decisional control (six items).…”

“…The higher the sum score, the higher assessment of individuality in care. The ICS has a proven internal homogeneity measured by the Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.80–0.94) in national (Suhonen, Schmidt, & Radwin, ; Suhonen et al., ) and international data sets (Suhonen, Berg et al., ; Suhonen et al., ). An item response theory approach employing Rasch modelling reported that the items work quite similarly in different language versions (Suhonen et al., ).…”

One article describes the development of the Oncology patients' Perceptions of the Quality of Nursing Care Scale (OPPQNCS) (Radwin, Alster and Rubin ), another the translation into Finnish and its testing of internal consistency and construct validity (Suhonen, Schmidt and Radwin ), and yet another the translation of its short form into Turkish and testing of internal consistency (Can et al.…”

“…A cross‐cultural validity study using a Rasch model analysis revealed general correspondence in the item calibration patterns across the different versions, but led to the recommendation to rephrase and retarget some of the items (Suhonen et al. ).…”
