Cross-cultural Ranking of IADL Skills

Abstract: Although causal theories of aging differ considerably across disciplines, the common denominator in published papers on the health and function of the aged is to be found in the methods section. The instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), used to determine the independence of the aged living in the community, are utilized both at a clinical and population level. While there has been a cross-disciplinary need for a scale to measure sub-populations, many scholars have been reticent to use the existing IA… Show more

“…A second skill level is called instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). It includes all functions at the basic level, but adds to it activities that allow individuals to remain independent in the community such as shopping, taking medication, and financial management (Lawton, Moss, Fulcomer, & Kleban, 1982;Truscott, 2000). Functional ability is important to care-giving in the elderly because, as individuals age, medical diagnoses are not a good measure of their ability to remain independent.…”

“…7 It is a potential global outcome measure in dementia research. 8,9 Because everyday functioning relates to daily life, IADLs may be especially sensitive to bias caused by various factors, such as age, gender, and cultural differences. Previous studies have shown gender effects on traditional IADL instruments, [9][10][11][12] as they include predominantly household activities, which may be performed more often by women.…”

“…Scores were highly correlated with the Mini-Mental State Examination ratings corrected for age ( r = .77, p < ,001; see Table 1). Possibly differences in social context, expressed via this orientation, may explain observed discrepancies (9). The Instrumental Activities of Daily Living assesses, among other activities, housekeeping, food preparation, and laundry.…”
