Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of als Functional Rating Scale-Revised in Portuguese language

Abstract: The aim of this study is the cross-cultural, as well as to validate in Portuguese language the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale -Revised (ALSFRS-R). We performed a prospective study of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinically defined. The scale, after obtaining the final version in Portuguese, was administered in 22 individuals and three weeks after re-applied. “…When the MIC was equal to the FVC, it was considered to indicate the presence of bulbar muscle dysfunction. The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R/BR) 16 and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Assessment Questionnaire (ALSAQ-40/BR) 17 were also administered. The ALSFRS-R/BR is scored from 0–48, where a lower score indicates worse function, while the ALSAQ-40/BR has scores of 0–100, in which higher scores indicate a worse quality of life.…”

“…Case group patients were clinically characterized in terms of symptom onset (bulbar or spinal), symptom duration (in months), feeding pathway (oral and/or enteral) and score on the ALS functional rating scale (ALSFRS) (7). This instrument assesses the motor, bulbar and respiratory function of these patients, serving as a prognostic indicator.…”
