Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Assessment of an Arabic Version of the Health Care Provider HIV/AIDS Stigma Scale

Abstract: HIV stigma among health care providers in the Arab world is understudied due to a lack of valid and reliable measures. Data from 352 Egyptian physicians was used to validate an Arabic version of the Health Care Provider HIV/AIDS Stigma Scale (HPASS). Exploratory factor analysis ( n = 1 9 4) suggested a 3 -factor structure. Confirmatory factor analysis ( n = 1 5 8) validated the three-factor solution with 18 items, which explained 5 3 .3 6% of the variance. All items loaded on their designated constructs, which… Show more

“…The findings on Cronbach's alpha and validity indices were similar to this study. Furthermore, Mokhtarabadi et al 20 and Aziz et al 21 assessed the validity and reliability of other HIV-related stigma scales among nonpeople with HIV; that is, general population and healthcare providers. These studies may be related to HIV stigma among PLWHA, so it is important to consider them in any study related to stigma validation, especially in confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis.…”

“…Up to our knowledge, there are only two tools for assessment of stigma of HCPs against PLHIV [ 14 , 18 ]. This is the first study that used HPASS as a validated instrument in colloquial Arabic for assessment of stigma and discrimination of PLHIV by HCPs [ 14 ]. The scale was previously used in USA and Canada [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Section 2 included assessment of HCPs attitudes towards PLHIV by the validated Arabic version of the HPASS scale. The validated Arabic version [ 14 ] consists of 18 items distributed through three subscales measuring prejudice (7 items), stereotypes (5 items), and discrimination (6 items), rated on a 6-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly agree) to 6 (strongly disagree), with higher scores indicating more stigma towards PLHIV by HCPs. It has a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.91.…”
