Cross-country determinants of life satisfaction: exploring different determinants across groups in society

Abstract: . We thank Stephen Lea and participants at the 30 th IAREP conference in Prague for comments on an earlier version and Gilles Winkler for excellent research assistance. AbstractThis paper explores a wide range of cross-country determinants of life satisfaction exploiting a database of 90,000 observations in 70 countries. We distinguish four groups of aggregate variables as potential determinants of satisfaction: political, economic, institutional, and human development and culture. We use ordered probit to inv… Show more

“…As for socio-demographic control variables, we employ standard regressors from well-being regressions (e.g., McBride 2001;Stutzer 2004;Dolan et al 2008;Bjoernskov et al 2008;Di Tella et al 2003) to proxy the age of the respondent, marital status, labor and educational status, subjective health, and the beforementioned attitudinal characteristics. As for their precise definition, we stay in line with Bruni and Stanca (2006) and refer to table A.2 in the appendix for details.…”

“…More specifically, decentralized political-decision making and government spending structures may introduce potential veto-players across tiers, often alongside shared political power at the federal level. Indeed, a direct beneficial impact of fiscal decentralization (but not of political autonomy) was identified in Bjørnskov, Dreher, 7 and Fischer (2008b), while using the same data Bjørnskov, Dreher, and Fischer (2008a) find that bicameral systems -which increase the number of veto-players in the federal legislature -improve individuals' satisfaction with their lives.…”

“…In contrast, the multi-level Extreme Bounds Analysis in Bjørnskov, Dreher and Fischer (2008a) shows very little support for any effects, positive or negative, of these two types of formal institutions. Additional cross-country findings in Bjørnskov, Dreher and Fischer (2007) also indicate no impact of government effectiveness per se on average happiness.…”

“…At the same time, there is a growing literature investigating the effect of country-level variables on individuals' subjective wellbeing (Di Tella et al 2001;Frey and Stutzer, 2002). However, the question of who are globalization's winners and losers in terms of well-being has so far only been analyzed in one crosscountry study (Bjørnskov et al, 2007), while the results of this analysis are of limited use if subjective well-being is not internationally comparable (Diener and Oishi, 2006). 1 To fill this gap, this paper analyzes the effect of globalization on people's life satisfaction drawing on a rich micro dataset for the EU-15 countries from 1975 to 2000.…”
