Cross-Compatibility of Methacrylate-Based Resin Composites and Etch-and-Rinse One-Bottle Adhesives

Abstract: Cross-compatibility between different combinations of methacrylate-based resin composites and etch-and-rinse one-bottle adhesives was evidenced for products from different manufacturers. This represents a desirable property of adhesives as it allows the flexibility to select different composite systems based on the specific restorative needs. SUMMARYObjective: To compare dentin shear bond strength (SBS) of four combinations of lightactivated one-bottle adhesives and composites to determine if cross-compatibili… Show more

“…Although different manufacturers' resin composite and adhesive systems were combined to treat this patient, it has been demonstrated that etch-andrinse adhesive systems can be safely used with composites from different manufacturers without compromising bond strength. 15 The three-step etchand-rinse adhesive system was used instead of the self-etching adhesive system supplied by the resin composite manufacturer because it provides a more reliable enamel bond and has been demonstrated in many clinical trials to be very effective. 12,16 In addition, both manufacturers claim that the products used in this case are compatible.…”

“…Their development and formulation are based on the fact that the addition of inert fillers to acrylic and dimethacrylate resins can significantly improve certain properties. The effect of filler depends on the type, shape, size and amount used and on the existence of efficient coupling between filler and matrix resin [54][55][56]. Many properties (e.g.…”

“…Moreover, when wet materials are tested, hydrolysis and polymerization of the silane phase inside the nanoclusters causes changes in stress transmission both inside and outside the nanoclusters. The major consequence would be the decrease of the mechanical deformation of the clusters which will induce the increase of the local tolerance to stress [29][30][31][32][33][34].…”
