A thermal imager was used for measuring the canopy temperature to calculate crop water stress index (CWSI) of rice under water deficit condition. The CWSI varied diurnally with peaks appeared at noon, and soil water deficit led to higher CWSI values during noon. Transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) were high at low CWSI, and reduced with increasing CWSI. The relationship between CWSI and Pn, Tr or gs at noon was described by quadratic polynomial equations. At critical noon, CWSI values for the decline trend in Pn (0.303, 0.385 and 0.446 at tillering, panicle initiation to booting, milk to soft dough stage) were higher than for decline in Tr and gs. Assuming a 5% reduction in Pn from maximum is moderate water deficit, the critical CWSI values were 0.420, 0.472 and 0.536 at tillering, panicle initiation to booting and milk to soft dough stages. CWSI at 14:00 decreased significantly with increasing relative soil moisture contents. There was a slight difference between the linear relations under different vapor pressure deficit (VPD) conditions. The critical relative soil moisture contents for a 5% reduction in Pn were 1.57%, 1.18% and 1.27% higher under high VPD than low VPD conditions. It implied that rice water status was determined in conjunction with field soil moisture content and air aridity. The water deficit diagnosis based on canopy temperature tracked by thermal infrared imager is a promising method in reflecting the conjuncted function of soil moisture deficit and air aridity on crop water status.

The paper describes the temperature profiles determined by thermal imagery in apricot tree canopies under the semi-arid conditions of the Black Sea Coast in a chernozem of Dobrogea Region, Romania. The study analyzes the thermal vertical profile of apricot orchards for three representative cultivars during summertime. Measurements were done when the soil water content (SWC) was at field capacity (FC) within the rooting depth, after intense sprinkler irrigation applications. Canopy temperature was measured during clear sky days at three heights for both sides of the apricot trees, sunlit (south), and shaded (north). For the SWC studied, i.e., FC, canopy height did not induce a significant difference between the temperature of apricot tree leaves (Tc) and the ambient air temperature (Ta) within the entire vertical tree profile, and temperature measurements by thermal imagery can therefore be taken at any height on the tree crown leaves. Differences between sunlit and shaded sides of the canopy were significant. Because of these differences for Tc-Ta among the apricot tree cultivars studied, lower base lines (LBLs) should be determined for each cultivar separately. The use of thermal imagery technique under the conditions of semi-arid coastal areas with low range of vapor pressure deficit could be useful in irrigation scheduling of apricot trees. The paper discusses the implications of the data obtained in the experiment under the conditions of the coastal area of the Black Sea, Romania, and neighboring countries with similar climate, such as Bulgaria and Turkey.

Article InfoCanopy temperature measurements with infrared thermometry have been extensively studied as a means of assessing plant water status for field and row crops. Achieving high quality peach fruit depends on the ability to maintain mild to moderate levels of water stress in the crop during the growing season. The paper examined the spatial distribution of tree canopy temperature (Tc) using thermal images in a peach orchard for irrigation scheduling. The variation of Tc was investigated in three irrigation regime treatments (factor A) that produced various soil moisture content (SMC) values, three cardinal points (factor B): South, North and East-West aspects combined, and five updown vertical position measurements (factor C: upper, middle upper, middle, middle lower and lower) across the tree canopy thermal images. It was found that Tc was significantly influenced by the irrigation regime. Cardinal point showed a significant Tc difference between South on the one hand and the other aspects. The vertical position within canopy image did not significantly influence Tc.
