Inter-species competition for applied nutrients may be managed by weed control in cultivated communities. However, intra-crop competition may still occur. Thus, regarding a fertilizer band as a finite nutrient source, individual rows of a cereal crop may compete for the applied nitrogen. The aim was to explore the partition of applied N between crop rows affected by the displacement of the fertilizer band relative to the rows. In a micro-plot experiment, a 15 N-ammonium-15 N-nitrate solution was injected in four positions parallel to two rows of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare). The course of 15 N crop uptake in each row was estimated by a sigmoid growth function using eight samplings during the elongation phase. The estimated parameters were used for calculating the asymptotic value (a), the time until a/2 was reached (T 0.5a ), and the uptake rate at this time (MaxRate), and related to the distance between the crop row and fertilizer band. The a-value decreased by 5.1%-point recovery cm −1 , T 0.5a increased by 0.5 day cm −1 and the MaxRate decreased by 0.3%-point recovery day −1 cm −1 . Placement of the fertilizer band centred between two crop rows caused an even access to the applied nitrogen, but a parallel displacement from the centre by a few centimetres significantly affected the parameters. The proliferation of the roots in the soil and thus the time until the roots reached the fertilizer zone is assumed to cause the inter-row competition for the band-injected N source. The access to the fertilizer band was clearly reflected in the dry matter production causing an uneven crop stand. The consequences of inter-row crop competition for a band-injected N source with respect to grain yield and grain quality were not explored, but attention on these parameters are required, particularly in the production of high quality wheat grains.

The objectives of this work were to determine the effects of initiating application of fertilizer nitrogen (N) to winter wheat at different growth stages (GSs) on grain yield and N use efficiency (NUE). A factorial experiment was carried out in two growing seasons (2011 and 2012) with five timings of first N application (GS 24/26 [tillering], GS 30, GS 31, GS 32 or GS 37) and an unfertilized control, two sowing densities (100 and 400 seeds/m 2 ) and a cattle slurry treatment (with or without slurry). The latter was included to simulate variation in soil N supply (SNS). Delaying the first application of N from the tillering stage until GS 30 had no significant effect on grain yield in either year. Further delaying the initial N application until GS 31 caused a significant yield reduction in 2011, in comparison to GS 30 application, but not in 2012. Differences in efficiency of recovery and use of fertilizer N by the crop among the first three application timings were small. There was no evidence to support alteration in the timing of the first application of N in response to low plant density. Slurry application did not influence SNS, so the interaction between SNS and fertilizer N application timing could not be determined. It is concluded that in order to maximise yield and NUE, the first N application should be applied to winter wheat between late tillering and GS 30 and that delaying the first N until GS 31 can lead to yield reductions compared to the yield obtained with earlier application.

A single and uniform fertilizer application may lead to ineffective crop nutrient uptake and use. In order to enhance nutrient use efficiency the application should be adjusted according to the need of the cultivated crop. This task is challenging because weather is unknown and unpredictable over the upcoming growing season. One solution is site-specific fertilizer application in several separate events throughout the season. Such a precision fertilization method requires information on the current crop state (e.g. the availability of water and nutrients in the soil) and a crop growth model that aims to assess current crop growth and near future needs. A field experiment with varying radiation, precipitation and nutrient conditions was established to test our crop growth model performance. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown using three fertilization rates with three precipitation and two radiation treatments within each fertilization treatment. The observed crop biomass accumulation in the highest fertilization treatment was considered as the highest possible in the prevailing conditions. The simulated (maximal) biomass accumulation was in agreement with the highest observed biomass yield. The results were found promising for further use of the model in crop growth evaluation during the growing season.
