Canola (Brassica napins L.) has the potential to be used as a winter crop in the southeastern United States, but little is known about its nitrogen management when grown in this region. Increasing fertilizer costs have increased interest in using poultry litter (PL) as an alternative nutrient source for crops in this region. However, evaluation of the use of PL on canola growth and yield is lacking. Thus, a field study was conducted at Shorter, AL (loamy sand soil) and Prattville, AL (fine sandy loam soil) using a randomized complete block design with four replications. Fertility treatments consisted of an unfertilized control (P0U0), commercial fertilizer N (urea, 180 kg N ha−1, P0U180), PL at 68 kg N ha‐1 with 112 kg N ha−1 urea (P68U112), PL at 112 kg N ha−1 with 68 kg N ha−1 urea (P112U68), and PL at 180 kg N ha−1 (P180U0). Overall, the combination of PL and urea application significantly increased canola growth (plant height and aboveground biomass) and elevated grain yield compared with PL application alone or with the control. The P68U112 treatment resulted in an equivalent aboveground biomass, grain yield, and N uptake compared with the recommended urea treatment. This study suggests that a combination of PL and commercial fertilizer N could provide sustainable canola yield production in the southeastern United States.

A research experiment was conducted during the Rabi season of 2021-22 at the College of Agriculture, SKRAU, Bikaner. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the influence of different nutrient management and weed control treatments on the nutrient content, uptake and nutrient use efficiency of fennel crop. The experiment consisted of sixteen treatment combinations, which included four nutrient management treatments and four weed control measures. The nutrient management treatments included control (no fertilizer applied), 75 % RDF, 100 % RDF and 125 % RDF and four weed control measures- weed free, pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg ha-1 (PE), oxyfluorfen @ 50g ha-1 (POE at 25 DAS) and weedy check. These treatments were replicated three times in a factorial randomized block design (FRBD), ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the results. The weed-free treatment was found to be significantly better in increasing the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content in both the seed and straw of the crop. Additionally, the weed-free treatment also resulted in higher nutrient uptake by the crop compared to the weedy check treatment. Among the nutrient management treatments, the application of 100% RDF showed the most promising results. It improved the nutrient content in both the seed and straw of the crop and recorded the highest nutrient use efficiency. This efficiency was found to be at par with the application of 125% RDF and significantly higher than the remaining treatments. Overall, the experiment demonstrated the importance of weed control and proper nutrient management in enhancing the nutrient content and uptake by the crop. The weed-free treatment and the application of 100% RDF were identified as the most effective strategies in achieving these goals. These findings can be valuable for farmers and agricultural practitioners in optimizing crop productivity and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.

Background: The focus of this research was to assess the biogas production of Chicken Manure (CM) collected from hybrid layer chickens fed non-commercial (CMNC) and commercial (CMC) feed, as well as to evaluate the bacterial load of feeding stock and digested slurry samples before and after Anaerobic Digestion (AD). The effects of the feedstock and digestion composition of CM on biogas production were measured. The experiment was carried out utilizing lab-based proto-type digesters for CM with or without inoculum. For each commercial and non-commercial feed, four experimental groups (CMNC1, CMNC2, CMC1, and CMC2) were designed using mixing ratios of CM: H 2 O: inoculum (25:25:50) and CM: H 2 O (50:50). For Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT), the digesters were set up at ambient temperature (28-34 C) for 30 days. The spread plate technique was used to determine the Total Viable Count (TVC), E. coli, and Salmonella spp. counts. Results:The highest average cumulative biogas yield was achieved from CMC2 > CMNC2 > CMC1 > CMNC1. The biogas production of inoculum added groups were statistically significant (p < 0.01) than the without inoculum groups. The average concentration of CH 4 and CO 2 in biogas was 49% and 51% for CMNC1, 58% and 42% for CMNC2, 46% and 54% for CMC1, 52% and 42% for CMC2. However, the H 2 S content was within the acceptable range except for the CMNC2 group. The bacterial load was decreased by 2-3 logs before and after AD, and this reduction was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion:The study concluded that the CM diluted with water and inoculum (25:25:50) ratio was recommended for sustainable biogas production.
