Background: The effect of confinement due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on air pollution has been investigated in several cities. Indeed, the concentration of the main air pollutants have decreased significantly due to the decline in activities consuming fossil fuels. However, it was found that the concentration of ozone (O 3 ) has increased in Nice, Rome, Valence, Barcelona, Turin, and Wuhan. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on photochemical pollution in Oran, Algeria. Methods: In Oran, a port city in the north-west of Algeria, the level of tropospheric ozone pollution was measured automatically every 15 min for 10 days at the same location before and after the confinement period, using an electronic nose, called APOMOS (air pollution monitoring system). This electronic circuit is equipped with an electrochemical sensor (MQ131) as well as a temperature and humidity sensor. Sampling was carried out in the central part of the Oran agglomeration from May to June 2020. The data related to the direction and intensity of the wind were processed to find a correlation between these parameters and the concentration of ozone in the studied area. Results: The impact of confinement on the increase of the ozone pollution levels in Oran, was estimated to be 52%. On the other hand, the statistical study of the pollution levels, the intensity and direction of the wind indicates that the important part of the downtown is involved in the generation of tropospheric ozone. Conclusion:The confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Oran led to the reduction of the road traffic and pollutants emissions and the increase of ozone levels in urban area. Thus, ozone was less degraded because there were low levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the atmosphere of this city during the confinement period.

Satellite images have a remarkable ability to help researchers map the distribution and detect the nature of the soil exposed on the earth's surface. The remote-sensing mapping of clayey soils makes it possible to determine their shrinking-swelling potentials. This approach is helpful in analyzing large areas where the traditional sampling approach with laboratory analysis is expensive. This high cost often leads to a limited number of samples and thus to a poor representation of a site with an underestimation of the presence of swelling soils. The Sidi - Chahmi area is representative of this type of soil. In addition, it is an area that undergoes the substantial urban sprawl of the city of Oran. The urbanization of this area is under the risk of clay-type soil movements, the identification of which by satellite imagery may help mitigate shrink-swell risk. EO-1-Hyperion hyperspectral images, whose effectiveness has already been proven for mapping clay minerals, were used to identify minerals such as illite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite in the Sidi - Chahmi area.

Abstract In Algeria, air pollution is classified as a major risk by the law. However, this risk is underestimated because there is no operational network for measuring air quality on a continuous basis.Despite the heavy investments made to equip several cities with these measurement systems, they are out of order due to a lack of continuous financial support.The alternative to the absence of these air pollution measurement networks can come from the recent development of electrochemical sensor technologies for air quality monitoring which arouses a certain interest because of their miniaturization, low energy consumption and low cost.We developed a low-cost outdoor carbon monoxide analyzer called APOMOS (Air pollution Monitoring System) based on electrochemical sensor managed by microcontroller. An application developed with the Python language makes it possible to manage process and analyze the collected data.In order to validate the APOMOS system, the recorded measurements are compared with measurements taken by a conventional analyzer.Comparison of the measurements resulting from conventional analyzer and those resulting from the APOMOS system gives a coefficient of determination of 98.39 %.Two versions of this system have been designed. A fixed version and another embedded, equipped with a GPS sensor. These 2 variants were used in the city of Oran in Algeria to measure the concentration of carbon monoxide continuously.The targeted pollutant is carbon monoxide. However, the design of the APOMOS system allows its evolution in an easy way in order to integrate other sensors concerning the various atmospheric pollutants.
